We are pleased to present the teacher’s guide and other educational materials for our forty-ninth Student Performances opera, Madame Butterfly. Composed by Giacomo Puccini, Madame Butterfly was one of his most enduring operas and his personal favorite.
Puccini was inspired to write Madame Butterfly after seeing David Belasco’s play of the same name. The composer studied Japanese folk melodies, customs, and culture in order to bring a unique essence to the opera. Although the premiere of Butterfly was a disaster, it has since become one of the most popular operas of all time.
We hope that the lesson plans, student worksheets, interactive website, DVD, music CD, and student newspaper, The Dallas Opera News, will assist you as you educate your students about music and the opera.
