The Juilliard School has appointed the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis director of its jazz studies program. Mr. Marsalis, who is the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center — and a Juilliard alumnus — officially takes up the appointment on July 1, but will actually start a few months earlier, overseeing spring auditions for the school’s fall 2014 class. He succeeds Carl Allen, the program’s director since 2008.
The new association comes with a bonus for Juilliard’s jazz students as well. They will have access to performance opportunities at Jazz at Lincoln Center, as well as that organization’s own educational programs and audience development projects, through which they can learn about digital marketing and social media.
