Vasily Petrenko, whose wife is a choral conductor, has provoked outrage with his by claiming that orchestras "react better when they have a man in front of them" and that "a cute girl on a podium means that musicians think about other things".
When are faced with a man there are less erotic distractions, and with less sexual energy the musicians can “focus on the music”, he told Norwegian paper Aftenposten.
Women also find it difficult to “be as dedicated as is demanded in the business” when they start having families, he added.
His comments come just days before American Marin Alsop will become the first woman to conduct Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
