Sounds of summer beckon at Grant Park

John von Rhein

Chicago Tribune   January 7, 2015   While portents of change echo across the local summer music landscape, one hot-weather classical enterprise that remains impervious to change, justifiably so, is the Grant Park Music Festival.

Given the successful marriage of municipal sponsorship and private artistic initiative that makes Grant Park one of the nation's major summer classical music festivals — indeed, it's the only free symphonic summer fest of its kind in the U.S. — no course correction is required. Why fix what ain't broken?

Artistic director and principal conductor Carlos Kalmar has put into place a model of symphonic and choral programming that, on a clear, dry evening in downtown Chicago, will draw thousands of audience members to the civic and cultural treasure that is Millennium Park.
